Using Engagements vs Tasks

Last updated: June 4, 2025

Terminology:

  • Engagements: The Engagement object is used to represent an interaction noted in a CRM system.

  • Engagement Types: The Engagement Type object is used to represent an interaction activity. A given Engagement typically has an Engagement Type object represented in the engagement_type field.

  • Tasks: The Task object is used to represent a task, such as a to-do item.

  • Notes: The Note object is used to represent a note on another object.

What is the difference between Engagements and Engagement Types?

Merge now supports Engagements & Engagement Types common models. These two particular common models are intended to represent any historical and/or important interaction with a customer! This could include, but is not limited to, a call, an email, or a meeting.

The Tasks common model represents to-dos in a CRM. It does not mean that something has happened, but tracks what is going to happen! This is similar to our Notes common model, in that these are both typically internal-facing for a CRM user.
